Those unable to attend in person are invited to join via Zoom:

Elizabeth Jane “Betty” Dauntless, 96, of Raleigh Hills, Oregon,

died peacefully on October 7, 2025 of natural causes. Elizabeth was born on March 27, 1929 to Clyde Bernard and Elizabeth Lorena Wright of Portland, Oregon in the Eastmoreland area. At the age of 14, she joined the Episcopal Church and lovingly led her parents to Christ through their mutual membership in the Church. She attended Lincoln High School and graduated from the University of Oregon. While at UO she joined Delta Gamma sorority and continued life-long relationships with her sorority sisters in Eugene and later in Portland, Oregon. Following her University of Oregon graduation, Elizabeth attended Stanford and received her master's in art education. After graduating with her master’s degree, she taught art education in public schools.

In 1951, she married Dr. Ted Chuman and raised three children, James, Lisa, and Margaret, in Eugene while working in the home. Betty was a life-long believer in volunteerism beginning with the formation of an arts and home economic group with neighbors in Eugene, designed to share and expand the education of their children. She also made routine donations of her time and talent to community groups in the form of calligraphic works, posters, and oil and watercolor paintings. She volunteered often within the Junior League of Eugene and in her ongoing relationships with the Delta Gamma sisterhood. She was also extremely active with St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Eugene. After her marriage to Ted, Betty worked as a commercial artist designing outdoor billboards for Obie Outdoor Advertising.

Betty was predeceased by her husbands: Ralph Carlson, Howard Dauntless, and Robert Wise. After Robert’s death in 2004, she returned to Portland and lived next door to her daughter Lisa in Raleigh Hills. At that time, she joined St. Barnabas Episcopal Church where she served on the call committee for homebound seniors, and she volunteered with the Portland Art Museum.

A masterful artist, gourmet cook, interior designer, landscaper and gardener with passion for outdoor fitness walking, Betty also loved to host formal dinner parties and informal potlucks.  Her favorite place to vacation was the Oregon Coast where she spent many happy hours as an only child fishing with her parents and then visiting with her own family. Her guidance, her warm presence, her friendship, and her humor will be missed by all who knew her including her children James Chuman (Maureen) of Eugene, Oregon; Margaret Schuman of Upper Arlington, Ohio; her stepdaughters Anne Kohls of Portland, Oregon and Sue Wise of Tualatin, Oregon, and stepson Bob Wise, of Tualatin, Oregon; as well as her devoted friends in Eugene and Portland. In 2012, Betty’s daughter Lisa preceded her in death. In lieu of flowers, donations in Elizabeth’s memory may be made to St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, Portland, Oregon.
