Outreach at St. Barnabas

For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me,

I was in prison and you came to me.

Matthew 25 : 35-36

St. Barnabas has enjoyed a long established outreach ministry.  In 2019 the Outreach Commission was developed to support the ministries our parishioners felt most identified with the mission of our church.  Our mission in 2021 will include continued support of the Saturday Food Bag Program, started in response to the pandemic and accompanying economic struggles.

Please contact the church office if you have an organization or idea you would like to propose to the Outreach Commission.  We are grateful to all those who contribute and volunteer to help others.

Do You Need Food?

Bag of Groceries

Anyone who is in need of food may come to St. Barnabas church on Saturday between 3 and 4 pm.  There are no requirements to receive food.  You do not need to be a member of our church (although we would be happy to welcome you).  You do not need to apply, provide proof of financial need, citizenship or residence.  We are happy to help you no matter who you are.

Your food bags will contain enough food to feed a typical family of 4 for at least 3 days.  Although we cannot guarantee the exact food and other products we can provide each week, here are the typical contents of the food bags:

  • Meat or vegetarian alternative

  • Fresh vegetables such as onion, root vegetables, or other seasonal produce

  • Fresh fruit such as apples, oranges, bananas or other seasonal produce

  • One quart milk, or non-dairy drink available upon request

  • One dozen eggs

  • Hummus, cheese, deli meat, breakfast meat or hot dogs, as available

  • Bread, or sometimes bagels.

  • Cereal or oatmeal

  • Pasta or rice

  • One or two canned products such as tomatoes, sauces, protein beans, soup, tuna, etc.

  • Peanut butter

  • Crackers, chips or cookies

  • Toilet paper

  • Trash bags

  • One cleaning or hygiene product such as cleaner, laundry soap, bar soap, shampoo, dish soap, etc.

We can also provide vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, pork free, and bags which do not require cooking.  We will try our best to accommodate other special dietary needs upon request.

COVID REQUIREMENTS

We require all customers to wear a face mask and to remain 6 feet apart from other customers and volunteers.  If you do not have a face mask, please ask us for one.  At this time, customers are not allowed inside of the buiding.  If you need help carrying the food to your car, please let us know.

We look forward to meeting you!

Want To Help?

We have a strong volunteer group committed to ensuring our neighbors have access to good, quality, fresh food throughout this pandemic and the related economic downturn.  There are many ways you can help out!

DONATE Money

Since we buy in bulk, we can typically buy more per dollar than private individuals can.  Therefore we ask you to consider giving simple cash.  Donation checks can be mailed to the church, or you can donate online (please select the "Community Dinner" fund.

Donate Food

We accept fresh fruit & vegetables, as well as baked goods, dry goods, cleaning and hygiene products.  We do not accept expired or homemade products.  Please bring food donations to Grafe Hall (the building closest to Vermont Street) between noon and 2 pm any Saturday, or call the church to make other arrangements for drop-off.

VOLUNTEER

We have a wide range of volunteer positions that include shopping, picking up donations, filling bags, handing out bags, dividing up bulk foods, reaching out to local businesses for support, helping to advertise our services, etc.

Some jobs require working in a building with a limited number of other volunteers, and other jobs can be done remotely.

All volunteers must follow Covid safety protocols when on site.
