The Women of St. Barnabas met on Sunday, June 26th. Thanks to all of you who attended.

The Pentecost chili cook off was under new leads this year. A big thank you to Kay, Melissa, and Sheila for putting this together. We had many new chili chefs this year which was great. This has become an annual staple in the St. Barnabas parish life.
This year we combined the Father’s Day breakfast with the celebration of our graduates. Sharing our Sunday this way worked out very well and offered great eats both before & after 10:00 a.m. services. I think the men enjoyed a month off from cooking and we enjoyed serving them.

Thank you to all that helped throughout the day.

Under new business we discussed how the supplies were doing for our community dinner food bags. Sunday food cart donations will now be split between Neighborhood House Food Bank and our community dinners. The 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sundays will go towards Neighborhood House. The 2nd and 4th Sunday donations will go toward the community dinner. Kay Martin was given $150.00 to restock hygiene items. If you would like to help with a monetary donation please make your checks to St. Barnabas and earmark either the dinner or food bags.

We are finishing up our Christmas in June drive for West Women’s and Children’s Shelter. Kay and Stu will deliver all donations after the 4th of July. If you are still interested in helping please contact them or leave your donation in the back of the church. The donations are so appreciated this time of year. Last year when they delivered the shelter’s shelves were absolutely empty of cleaning supplies and hygiene items. Their grants had been cut way back and they were not sure where to turn. So thank you to all who have helped with this.

In July we will continue with the Grauer Back-to School Project. This has been a long running outreach with St. Barnabas. Many of our mothers were involved with this many years ago. The Grauer Back-To-School Project began at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in 2001 to carry on Grace and Marion Grauer’s giving spirit toward kids. Today, Grauer is a vital partnership of SW Portland churches, businesses, and Neighborhood House, dedicated to helping low-income SW Portland families start the new school year with school supplies and new clothing for their children. This helps to outfit 400 kids with school supplies, backpack, new athletic shoes, new socks, coat, underwear, and a t-shirt. We will have a take home list of donations they are requesting. We can also help in sorting and filling backpacks the week of Aug. 8 – 11. This will take place at Hayhurst Grade School from 9 – 11 and 1 – 3. Distribution day is Saturday, August 13th. If you have any questions please feel free to ask Mae Orendorff or Lisa Begley.

September 18th is Portland’s annual Race For The Cure to help sponsor the fight against breast cancer. Vicki Church sponsors a team “Never Give Up”. She would love to have many of us from St. Barnabas walk along side of her. We will have a car pool leave from church that morning. Fr. Sean will have communion waiting upon our return. To be a part of this team you can register on line under the team name or give Vicki a check for $44.00 and she will sign you up.  It is quite moving to be a part of the sea of pink. It is not necessary to walk to be a part of her team. Sponsor today and be a part of the prayers that keep her team walking.

Our annual church picnic is scheduled for Sunday September 11th. With our garden gone this year we will have room for tables outside. This will be great if the weather is with us. Remember, it is also Grandparents Day so it is a great time to bring a guest to church with you.

Our next meeting date is scheduled for August 28th. Hope to see you there.
